The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has revised the qualifications for p1 teachers to ensure compliance with the new competence based Curriculum CBC.
The changes have been effected following ba directive from the Ministry of Education to ensure they get quality education and training at the Teachers Training Colleges.
Qualifications for a primary school teacher in Kenya under TSC changes.
Quality training and CBC compliance is what the government wants the Teachers Training Colleges to focus as they prepare teachers.
Inorder to ensure that teachers are well realigned With the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), the minimum qualification for entry into teaching profession will be a diploma in education .
Two major categories in the primary school teacher levels have been identified. These include:
- Posses a diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education for PP1&PP2
- Posses a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education for Grades 1 to 6.
Inorder for one to enroll for training as a primary school teacher,here are the minimum requirements that must be satisfied.
For one to be employed as an ECDE Teacher
- Have a Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (PP1&PP2)
- Must have scored a KCSE Mean Grade C (plain) and above
- Have a Mean grade C in all the subjects
The ecde teachers are expected to teach all subjects at both pp1 and pp2 learning stages.
TSC Requirements for Primary Teacher Education (PTE) Employment
- A teacher must have a minimum grade C Plain or its equivalent in KCSE
- A teacher must have PTE Certificate from Kenya National Examinations council (KNEC)
- A teacher must have a Mean grade of C- (minus) for visually and hearing impaired individuals.
- One must haves a Special Needs Education – KSL and Braille is considered a second teaching subject, for example Biology/KSL or Geography/Braille.
Teachers trained under this level will teach all subjects from Grades 1 to three .
They will also be required to teach Grades 4 to 6 with some specialization in indigenous and foreign languages.
