“It Is Unlawful.” Registrar Of Political Parties Now Tells Ruto Off On Defectors.
The Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu has now termed as illegal the action of some parties in the Azimio
coalition joining that of deputy president William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
In an interview with Taifa Leo by phone on Monday, August 29, 2022, Mrs Nderitu said that the post-election agreement between Kenya Kwanza and members of
parliament from the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and Kenya Kwanza is against the current law political parties.
“Legally, those who have announced to have broken from the Azimio Alliance cannot claim to join Kenya Kwanza or
other alliances without following the legal procedures to withdraw,” said Mrs. Nderitu.
“That agreement is not legally recognized and therefore, it is illegal,” he added.
Ms. Nderitu noted that according to the current law on political parties, a person cannot be a member of two parties or two alliances at the same time.
“The condition is that those politicians withdraw from the first party or union legally before joining another,” he explains.
The other day, UDM party leader, Mandera senator-elect Ali Roba announced that the party has joined Kenya Kwanza.
He led several leaders elected in the August 9 general election, to visit President-elect William Ruto at the Deputy President’s official residence in Karen Street, Nairobi.
