Open in new tab In what will turn out to be a great literary break from the usual set texts, The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has announced a replacement for the currently examinable set texts. The news came as a celebratory gift to lovers of books and literature, students not forgotten in the arrangement.

KICD is an institute duly established through the KICD Act No. 4 of 2013 of the laws of the republic of Kenya. KICD is mandated to about 15 major roles within the education circles of this country. Chief being amongst them are but not limited to:- Developing, reviewing and approving learning programs, curricula and curriculum support materials that are to meet international standards for all levels of learning and teaching.
The levels may roughly include:- Early childhood care, development and education;
Pre-primary education; Primary education;
education at secondary level; Adult, continuing and non-formal education; Teacher education and training: Special needs education; and
Technical and vocational education and training.
In a communication seen by the media, the institute is set to replace the texts both in kiswahili and English but used for learning instructions in Fasihi and Literature having been introduced in 2018. Replacement of the said texts is done every quite often, 3-4 yrs.

The Pearl, John Steinbeck’s work came in (Optional book)
Memories we lost, Chris Wanjala (short stories) moved in as an Optional book.
Inheritance by David Mulawa (play), Optional book.
2019 Kiswahili set books at the Kenyan secondary schools.
1: Chozi la Heri, Assumpta K. Matei (replaced ‘Kidagaa Kimemwozoea’, (compulsory)
2: Kigogo, Pauline Kea Kyovi moved in as a new play.
3: An anthology, Tumbo Lisiloshiba na Hadithi Nyingine by Alifa Chokocho na Dumu Kayanda, Short stories moved in.

1: ‘Fathers of Nations’ by Paul B. Vitta, publisher, Oxford University Press East Africa. (Novel) replacing the ‘Blossoms of the Savannah’ by Henry Ole Kulet.
The optional English set books
1: Parliament of Owls, Adipo Sidang’, publisher, the East African Educational replaces The pearl by John Steinbeck’s.
2: Silence Song and other Stories which is an anthology of short stories gets to replace the current Memories we Lost.
New set books in kiswahili
1: Cheche za Moto a production of John Habwe is the new compulsory set text to replace Assumpta K Matei’s ‘Chozi La Heri.’
2: The ‘Tumbo Lisiloshiba’ is eventually edged out by ‘Mapambazuko ya Machweo’ as the next anthology of short stories.
Teachers Training Colleges Set Books
1: A Spider’s Web by Samuel Wachira is the new text to be studied in Teacher Training Colleges,TTCs.
2: Mzigo wa Kichaa to be studied at Diploma levels.
The books will be effected on the current Form Two students.
