An Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) clerk attached to Nyeri County’s

Kieni West Constituency was on Wednesday arraigned for allegedly issuing a voter with extra ballot papers during the August 9th General Election.

Appearing before Nyeri Senior Principal Magistrate James Macharia, the accused, Pamela Wangui, who was stationed

at Kihuhiro Primary School Polling Station, was charged with contravention of the Elections Act.

She was accused of giving one John Maina five stamped presidential ballot papers and an extra-parliamentary ballot paper.

The voter who received the extra ballot papers was also charged with illegally being in possession of stamped ballot papers at the polling booth.

The court heard that the duo was arrested after the presiding officer raised alarm after noticing that Maina took an extended amount of time at the polling booth.

The pair was swiftly arrested and taken to Endarasha police station where they were released on a cash bail of Ksh.15,000 each.

Lawyer Loise Wamaitha, who was representing the suspects, requested the court to release them on a reasonable cash bail.

“The suspects are not flight risks since they reside in Endarasha ward where they allegedly committed the offence,” she said.

Justice Macharia released the accused on a cash bail of Ksh.100,000 each.

The case will be mentioned on September 12, 2022.
